On board air

If you own a recreational vehicle or do a great deal of off-roading, one of the most valuable tools to have is an on board air system. RV enthusiasts and off-roaders have come to appreciate the importance of having an on board air system equipped with their vehicles and the sheer versatility that these systems offer. Having one of these systems on hand can mean the difference between being stranded in the middle of nowhere and being on your way somewhere.

On board air systems have a number of uses in recreational vehicles, from controlling level load air suspension systems to reinflating and reseating tires. A good on board air system can also be useful in powering air tools such as impact wrenches. Off-roaders use on board air to control axle air lockers, operate air jacks and perform other small tasks that may require compressed air.

CO2 air tanks offer a quick, compact and simple solution for on board air, and a number of vendors offer on board air systems for an inexpensive price. Unlike air compressors, CO2 air tanks are more compact and portable, meaning they can be used in a greater number of places as well as be mounted in more locations within a vehicle. One of the most well known vendors is Power Tank, a standard setter among providers of air tank systems. Available in capacities up to 20 lbs, a Power Tank can refill a 35” tire to 30 psi in just seconds and is also capable of refilling a large RV tire to 135 psi in a matter of minutes.

If you use your on board air tank on a regular basis, then it will have to be refilled at some point. CO2 air tanks can either be exchanged or refilled at your local gas company or any location that is capable of refilling these tanks. While tanks can be exchanged right away, if you request to have your existing tank refilled, it may be a day or so before it can be returned to you. The same fittings that are used on air compressors can also be used on these CO2 on board air systems and most of these can be found in hardware and home improvement stores.

If you do any serious off-roading you know the importance of on-board air. On board air can be used for re-inflating your tires due to leaks, reseating tires back on their rim, aiding in tire repairs, and for running air tools like impact wrenches.

The more serious off-roader even relies on his on-board air to run his axle air lockers or provide a quick lift to his truck with an air jack. Of course, if you have a powerful on-board air system you might find yourself also blowing sand and water out of your air filter or inflating your crushed fuel cell back into shape.
And in all the world there is only ONE on-board air system that can do all of these things and do them well. It is The Power Tank.

System Recommendations
These are very general guidelines to help you make a decision on what size is right for you. We know there are many other factors to consider. If you have any questions or concerns give a call and we’ll be happy to help you.

RV / Motorhome

5 lb. System – Too small in volume to be practical for most RV motorhome tires.
10 lb. System – 30 lb. full weight and 24″ tall make this size system a good choice for easier toting. Works great with even the larger 22.5″ tires as well as the 16″ high pressure toy hauler tires. For total convenience get it with the Speed Bag.
15 lb. System – 36 lb. full weight and 30″ tall makes this system a bit larger than the 10 lb. system and with 50% more volume, this size is better suited for the larger class A coaches. If you have a physical limitation go with the 10 lb. system.
20 lb. System – This system is very heavy (50 lb. when full) and much larger in physical size than the 10 and 15 lb. size. We recommend this system be hard mounted in your rig like in a trailer compartment or near the door of a toy hauler with easy access. The down side is that is is less portable but the up side is that it lasts a long time between fills.
